ENTRYQUIN 50%
Composition:
Each 1 gm contains:
Colistin (as sulfate) …………….………… 500000 IU.
Trimethoprim ………………………………… 37.5 mg.
Properties:
Colistin is a polypeptide antibiotic belonging to the class of polymyxins. Colistin exerts a bactericidal action by disruption of the cytoplasmic membrane, leading to an alteration of cell permeability and thereby a loss of intracellular material. Colistin has a bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-negative bacteria, including Enterobacteriaceae, in particular Escherichia coli. Colistin has very little activity against Gram-positive bacteria and fungi. The Gram-positive bacteria and some species of Gram-negative bacteria such as Proteus and Serratia are naturally resistant to colistin. However, the acquisition of resistance in Gram-negative enteric bacteria to colistin is rare and is due to single mutation.
Trimethoprim is an anti-infective that belongs to the family of diaminopyrimidines. It is active against streptococci and most Gram-negative bacteria. Trimethoprim has a bactericidal power by blocking the biosynthesis of folic acid inhibition of dihydrofolate reductase microbial.
Colistin (as sulfate) is very poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. In serum and tissue concentrations of colistin are very low. However, colistin is present in large quantities and persistently in different sections of the digestive tract.
Trimethoprim is rapidly absorbed after oral administration. It is widely distributed in the body. The combination of colistin and trimethoprim was synergic against a variety of Enterobacteriaceae negative bacteria.
