Compostion:

Each 1 gm contains:

Colistin sulphate…………….……………….340 mg.

(Equiv. to colistin base 300 mg ………6.000.000 IU)

(Since each 1 mg colistin = 20.000 IU)

Properties:

Colistin is a polypeptide antibiotic. It produces its antibacterial activity against G-ve bacteria as (Klebsiella, Salmonella, Shigella, Pasteurella, E.coli, Pseudomonas). Colistin produces its bactericidal effect by interacting strongly with phospholipids in the bacterial cell membrane resulting in disrupting their permeability and functions.

Uses:

Chickens – Turkeys

Used for treatment of enteritis and diarrhea due to colistin sensitive M.O. as:

Klebsiella , Salmonella , Shigella , Pasteurella , E.coli and Pseudomonas.

 Doses:

Spp.: Chickens – Turkeys

Route: orally via drinking water

–  1gm / 6 liter drinking water daily for 3 – 5 days.

Warning &Precautions:

• Withdrawal time: in chickens & turkeys: 3 days.
• Not used in chickens producing eggs for human consumption

Contra – Indications:

Not used with bactericidal antibiotic.

Side Effects:

Rare, since it is not absorbed after oral administration.

Storage: 

Store at temperature not exceeding 30º C , in dry place and to be used immediately after opening.
